چکیده

In current robotics research there is a vast body of work on algorithms and control methods for groups of decentralized cooperating robots, called a swarm or collective. These algorithms are generally meant to control collectives of hundreds or even thousands of robots; however, for reasons of cost, time, or complexity, they are generally validated in simulation only, or on a group of a few tens of robots. To address this issue, this paper presents Kilobot, an open-source, low cost robot designed to make testing collective algorithms on hundreds or thousands of robots accessible to robotics researchers. To enable the possibility of large Kilobot collectives where the number of robots is an order of magnitude larger than the largest that exist today, each robot is made with only $14 worth of parts and takes 5 min to assemble. Furthermore, the robot design allows a single user to easily operate a large Kilobot collective, such as programming, powering on, and charging all robots, which would be difficult or impossible to do with many existing robotic systems. We demonstrate the capabilities of the Kilobot as a collective robot, by using a small robot test collective to implement four popular swarm behaviors: foraging, formation control, phototaxis, and synchronization. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. Kilobot: A Robotic Module for Demonstrating Behaviors in a Large Scale (\(2^{10}\) Units) Collective

A collective of robots can together complete a task that is beyond the capabilities of any of its individual robots. One property of a robotic collective that allows it to complete such a task is the shape of the collective. This paper presents Kilobot, a simple modular robot designed to work in a collective to self-assemble and self-heal that collective’s shape. In previous work, an algorithm ...

Limited bandwidth recognition of collective behaviors in bio-inspired swarms

Models of swarming and modes of controlling them are numerous; however, to date swarm researchers have mostly ignored a fundamental problem that impedes scalable human interaction with large bio-inspired robot swarms, namely, how do you know what the swarm is doing if you can’t observe every agent in the collective? Some swarm models exhibit multiple emergent behaviors from the same parameters....

Swarm-Enabling Technology for Multi-Robot Systems

Swarm robotics has experienced a rapid expansion in recent years, primarily fueled by specialized multi-robot systems developed to achieve dedicated collective actions. These specialized platforms are in general designed with swarming considerations at the front and center. Key hardware and software elements required for swarming are often deeply embedded and integrated with the particular syst...

Programmable Self-Disassembly for Shape Formation in Large-Scale Robot Collectives

We present a method for a large-scale robot collective to autonomously form a wide range of user-specified shapes. In contrast to most existing work, our method uses a subtractive approach rather than an additive one, and is the first such method to be demonstrated on robots that operate in continuous space. An initial dense, stationary configuration of robots distributively forms a coordinate ...

Self-Organized Collective Decision-Making in a 100-Robot Swarm

We study a self-organized collective decision-making strategy to solve a site-selection problem using a swarm of simple robots. Robots can only move forward or turn in place; sense the intensity of the ambient light; and exchange 3-byte messages with peers in a limited range. The goal of the swarm is to collectively decide which of the sites available in the environment is the best candidate si...
